µTorrent is a small and incredibly popular BitTorrent client.

Micro-Sized Yet Feature Filled

Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange.

Resource-Friendly

µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 1 MB in size.

Skinnable and Localized

Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn't available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!

Actively Developed and Improved

The developer puts in a lot of time working on features and making things more user-friendly. Releases only come out when they're ready, with no schedule pressures, so the few bugs that appear are quickly addressed and fixed.

Popular cross-platform messaging app, WhatsApp is now going to be available on BlackBerry 10, in spite of a previous statement from a member of the WhatsApp back in December of 2012. According to James Richardson of CrackBerry, a team member responded to his question via email by saying “We have no plans to support BlackBerry 10 at the moment, sorry.” (Emphasis mine.)

Anyone is entitled to a change of heart, of course, and there is now cause for BlackBerry users to rejoice, as an official statement has been released. Yes, BlackBerry users will be able to use WhatsApp  this month.

Compatibility

The native WhatsApp BlackBerry application is compatible with the following systems.

           * 4.6.0 or higher

           * BB10.0.10 or higher

Why the change of heart?

On BlackBerry’s part, it is a no brainer. They need all the attractive points they can get to get out of the funk they’ve been in for quite some time. They’re not even getting an Instagram app! On the part of WhatsApp, the official reason is:

“BlackBerry has been a great platform for WhatsApp for many years. Delivering WhatsApp on BlackBerry 10 devices is in line with our goals of ensuring that our customers around the world can continue to communicate with the most important people in their lives.” ~Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp

Whether or not (or how) the WhatsApp team was wooed by BlackBerry, well, that’s for us to find out.

What about BBM?

This is one big question floating around. BBM is a unique selling point of BlackBerry units, and the introduction of a native WhatsApp BlackBerry application does seem counterintuitive. After all, BBM is very much limited to users who use the brand, alienating contacts who use other phones. With the native WhatsApp BlackBerry application, the world is suddenly opened up. Why should people continue using BBM? Could this spell the death of BlackBerry’s own messaging app?

WhatsApp for BlackBerry is now available at BlackBerry World for free. Take note, though, that starting this year, WhatsApp is going to follow a subscription model, with the first year free and every year after at $0.99. Still not a bad deal at all.

CCleaner Android App Announced

Android users will be able to clean their smartphones and tablets with ease once the CCleaner app is released later this year. Piriform (makers of the massively popular CCleaner software) have announced they are working on the CCleaner Android app and it will be released soon. For those of you that are not familiar with CCleaner-it is a popular cleaning software that removes unnecessary files and repairs the registry, resulting in a faster, more stable computer. Now Android users will be able to keep their mobile devices operating like new too with just one click.

According to the official press release the app is currently being tested. Piriform wants to ensure the software works perfectly through the app and will provide the results Android users expect of it before launching officially. The beta testing phase is rumoured to start in a few weeks so the release date for the CCleaner app for Android might not be too far away. The only details of the app released by Piriform are that it will be quick and easy to use with one-click cleaning. Helping to keep your Android devices running like new

One question people have about the CCleaner app is whether it will be free to use on Android devices. At present, CCleaner is available on PCs and Macs. Users can download and use it for free or pay for the premium version which includes support, automatic updates and multiple profile cleaning. So far the main versions of the software have proven to be very popular-accumulating over 1 billion downloads since the software was launched in the mid 2000′s. The availability of free versions has obviously aided the software’s popularity. It’s unclear whether the app version will prove as popular if a free version is not released.

There is no word from the company as yet on whether they are going to charge for the app or not. Realistically, it would be prudent for the company to at least provide a free version of the app, keeping in line with their policy for PC users. If they choose to only release a paid version, it could lead to a backlash from Android users and low adoption rates. After all, there are already some free alternatives available to them. However, avid CCleaner fans (and there seems to be a lot of them) will probably be keen to try CCleaner Android ahead of the other options.

Piriform historically, has always offered free versions of its products. CCleaner, Speccy, Defraggler and Recuva all have free versions. Like CCleaner, the other programs are system utilities aimed at improving computer performance, enhancing security and aiding users in the restoration of lost files or computer information. Hence, Piriform’s decision to develop apps has been welcomed by the mobile community.

The alternatives to CCleaner Android already available include-CleanMaster, App Cache Cleaner, 1-click Cleaner, Android Delete History and QuickCleaner to name a few. CCleaner Android will undoubtedly face stiff competition in the mobile app sector, but I for one am excited to see if the app will live up to the hype its desktop predecessor has developed.

Just as Android mobile usage is on the rise, so is malware targeting Android users.  According to a recent report from Kaspersky, malware on smartphones was up 780 percent last year, over the year prior.  Of all of the mobile malware that was identified, 99 percent specifically targeted Android devices.  Android devices appear to be at a particular disadvantage when compared to Apple devices, due in large part to Apple’s “closed” iTunes store.  Due to the fact that Apple vets any of the iPhone apps sold in the iTunes store, users can avoid many of the malicious programs.  In fact, the largest category of mobile malware comes in the form of fake apps and links.

Part of what is fueling this huge increase in malware that targets Android users is a growing market for mobile malcode creation kits.  Additionally, it has been reported that there is also an increase in the sale and use of fraudulent developer accounts at Google Play.  In order to sell apps through Google Play, developers must pay a small fee, and are required to have their accounts verified and tied to a specific domain. Android malware developers can purchase these already verified developer accounts on the black market,  which then provides the malware developer with the ability to sell their applications through the Google Play marketplace.  This is how malicious mobile malware can be disguised as a legitimate apps for sale.

With the advent of Siri came an onslaught of attempts by other applications to replicate Siri’s success.  Luckily for Android users, there is a promising new voice controlled personal assistant that may be able to give Siri some serious competition.  Not simply content to be a Siri clone, Utter is extremely functional and fast.  The new Utter app allows for device based commands to be performed without the need for a data connection.

Video demonstration of the product in action reveals that the app’s voice recognition is both accurate and fast. Utter is intended to work so quickly that it can replace manual implementation of your device. Utter runs in the background of your device.  Additionally, it doesn’t draw heavily upon your phone’s resources. One great feature is that users will not have to open up separate applications in order to execute voice commands.  Users can choose the method by which to initiate a command, including shaking the device, waving, or simply pressing a button.  Utter responds to the user voice command without interrupting whatever else you are doing in the device.  Without a separate user-interface, the functions of Utter are available anywhere, anytime.

Utter promises to be able execute voice commands in under one second.  The BETA release of Utter is providing Android users with the ability to get involved in the testing stage.  Initial testers had reported some bugs that needed to be worked out. It was reported that some users were getting force closes when the application starts or on device boot, particularly when the device is on silent or vibrate. Also, weather and time was not provided accurately for the United States. However, as the product is only in BETA,  initial fixes were provided with more permanent fixes promised to be on the way. Current Flipboard users will flip for all of the new features that are included in Flipboard 2.0.  For those who are not familiar with the current version of Flipboard, it allows users to view content through magazine-style feeds.  The content can include a wide spectrum of things including items such as news articles, video, Instagram photos. Users clip the content and display it in a grid that can be flipped through as magazine pages.  When a user clicks on the content within the grid, they can view it in full detail.

However, the earlier versions of Flipboard didn’t allow users to bookmark content.  Also, earlier versions were less social. With Flipboard 2.0, users can make their own magazines with the content found on Flipboard.  Users can also edit their magazines with a new web-based tool that is also being released in the update. Also in the newest version of Flipboard, users can share content more easily within the app as well as start discussions around the selected content.  Users will be able to comment on other people’s creations. Additionally, users will now be alerted when someone likes an item in one of their magazines.

Flipboard is growing.  Registered users have increased from 20 million in August, to the current level of 50 million users.  The expanded usage allows Flipboard to achieve a larger market share in the mobile and retail markets.  Flipboard has run ads in its app for over two years, including ads from publishers. Additionally, Flipboard has integrated products and product descriptions from Etsy. Flipboard users can complete an Etsy purchase completely through an in app browser window, simply by clidking on the “buy” button.  Additionally, Flipboard may be bringing additional retailers to the app in the future.  The upgraded Flipboard 2.0 is currently only available for iOS devices.  However, an upgraded version is expected to be coming to Android soon.

That’s why the music business will never die, instead, it just goes through waves of changes. And when it comes to changes, technology plays a large role. Think of streaming services, online album releases, and even “free” music sources.When it comes to streaming online, Pandora Radio – or simply Pandora – is one of the most recognizable names. Launched in 2005, the service made quite a number of music lovers all over the world happy. Of course, the industry had something to say about licensing and fees, so recently, Pandora had to make changes to its service. Now, only users in the US, Australia, and New Zealand have full access, which sucks for those of us who are in other parts of the world.

On a positive note, Pandora is now available in the Windows Phone Marketplace. If you’re an avid Pandora user, here’s finally a reason you might consider using Windows Phone – but only if you’re on Windows Phone 8. Pandora for Windows 8 is available for FREE, and the best thing about it is that you’ll have a totally ad-free experience for the entire year. Sure, that’s only nine months at this point, but compare that with the $3.99 per month/$36 per year fee you have to pay for Pandora One for Android and iOS…

Even better, Windows Phone 8 users are exempt from the free listening cap. Users of Android and iOS only have 40 hours of free streaming, but this year at least Windows Phone 8 users won’t have to worry about that!

Chris Welch of The Verge makes a good point: for once, the best version of a popular app is on Windows. Is Pandora for Windows Phone 8 the start of something good for the slacker in the mobile scene? Considering that Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows Phone 8 next year, it might not matter.

Technically known as alkali-aluminosilicate sheet glass, Gorilla Glass by Corning has given electronic device owners much more confidence in handling our devices. I suppose that is a good way of saying that we have a not-so-free pass to be a little more negligent. That’s because this material is practically resistant to damage. Of course, the thinness and lightness of Gorilla Glass also make it the perfect choice as screen material for our shiny tablets and phones.

Sometime in the future, though, Gorilla Glass might be ousted from its pedestal. By no less than a precious stone. Sapphire.

I suppose that mobile gadget screens are not the first thing that come to mind when sapphire is mentioned. Understandably, a beautifully glowing blue stone is probably what you’re thinking of. What researchers are looking at, however, is not that naturally occurring precious stone. Instead, they are doing loads of work on manufactured sapphire.

Fancy sapphire screens?

Sapphire is now being considered as the future material for screens that are tough as tough can be, thanks to the hardness and durability of the stone. It only comes second to diamond in terms of hardness. That means if we get sapphire screens, we really do not have to worry about scratches or cracks. (As great as Gorilla Glass is, screens today still do shatter.) Currently, it already has applications in the military – as transparent armor and protection for vehicles. I can just see the US DoD going for this kind of development!

The main issue with sapphire screens is the price. Gorilla Glass is rather cheap, but sapphire will cost about 10 times as much to use in gadgets – at the current state of things. Researchers are hoping that in the next few years, we will see a decline in the price of manufactured sapphire, thanks to more competition and better technology. And, if this does happen, we just might see the material on our every day gadgets.

iPhone 5 Tips and Tricks

These simple tips and tricks will help you travel from one destination to the next, get more done with Siri, and make the things you do every day even easier.

Get there with Quick Route.

When Maps drops a pin on a location, you can get turn-by-turn directions to that location almost instantly. Just tap the Quick Route button next to the location’s name.

See up close with Flyover.

Switch to Flyover view in Maps by tapping the 3D button. Now you can explore cities from the air as you zoom, pan, and rotate around landmarks

Tilt and rotate with two fingers.

As you’re looking at a map, use two fingers to tilt or rotate the view. Maps keeps the names of the streets and places where they belong. So everything’s easy to read, and you won’t get lost.

Head north in a tap.

Rotate a map a few times, and you could lose your north-south orientation. But it’s easy to get it back. Just tap the compass icon in the upper-right corner.

See how to use Siri.

When you press and hold the Home button, Siri asks, "What can I help you with?" Tap the "i" button to see a detailed list of the ways Siri can help you get things done.

Tell Siri who’s who.

Tell Siri about your relationships, such as “Erin is my wife” or “Rick is my dad.” Then you can say “Text my wife” or “Call dad” and Siri knows who you mean.

Set your locations.

Be sure to enter your home and work addresses in Contacts. That way, Siri can remind you to do things when you leave or arrive at either place.

With AirPlay Mirroring, you can share exactly what’s on your iPhone 5 with your HDTV connected to an Apple TV. Just double-click the Home button, swipe all the way to the right, and select AirPlay Mirroring.

Customize your keyboard.

Create your own personal dictionary, including shortcuts for each word. So your keyboard not only autocorrects, it knows exactly what you want to say as you type. In Settings, tap General > Keyboard > Add New Shortcut. From there you can add new phrases and assign optional shortcuts to them.

Create an event fast.

Touch anywhere on the calendar to create an event. To change your schedule, just drag events around. Tap for day, month, or list view. And rotate to landscape to see an entire week.

Everything has an alert.

Assign a specific tone or create a custom vibration for new mail, Calendar alerts, tweets, and reminders. In Settings, tap Sounds to assign each a tone or vibration.

Locate your lost iPhone.

If you’ve lost your iPhone, Find My iPhone can help you locate it. Just go to Settings > iCloud and turn on the Find My iPhone feature.

Save images from the web.

In Safari, touch and hold an image to save it to your Camera Roll or copy it to paste into an MMS or email.

Give your texts some character.

Access all sorts of smileys, animals, shapes, and other peculiarities from your emoji-enabled keyboard. Just go to Settings > General > Keyboard and tap International Keyboards. Add a new keyboard and select Emoji. Now when you type, just tap the globe button and choose the emoji that fits the mood.

Get some peace and quiet.

In Settings, turn on Do Not Disturb to avoid dealing with all incoming calls and notifications. Enable it manually or schedule a recurring time. Or allow calls from your favorites or specific contact groups.

Scroll to the top fast.

In Safari, Mail, Contacts, and many other apps, tap the status bar — which displays the network information, time, and battery level — to scroll quickly to the top.

Lock the screen orientation.

Double-click the Home button to bring up the multitasking bar, then swipe from left to right. Now tap the portrait orientation lock once to turn it on and again to turn it off.

Drop a pin.

In Maps, touch and hold anywhere on a map to drop a pin so you can find an address, get directions, or share it with a friend for a meet-up.

Pinch to zoom.

In the Camera app, pinch to zoom in and out of a scene up to 5x. You can also use the zoom slider.

Add PDFs to iBooks.

From a Mail message or a web page, touch and hold the PDF icon or link, then select “Open in iBooks.”

Lighten the load.

In your wallet.

Passbook stores your boarding passes, gift cards, coupons, and more. So when you’re boarding at the gate or checking out at the café, just open Passbook, find the pass you need, and have it scanned — right from your iPhone.

Create web clips.

To add a website to your Home screen, visit the page in Safari and tap the Share button at the bottom of the Safari window. Then tap Add to Home Screen.

Learn some keyboard tricks.

*Tap the space bar twice, and iPhone adds a period and capitalizes the next word.

*To enter a number or symbol quickly, touch and hold, then select the key you want. Lifting your finger returns you to the alphabet keyboard.

*Touch and hold a letter to reveal a list of special characters.

Scrub through audio and video.

When you’re watching a video or listening to music or a podcast, the scrubber bar lets you skip to any point along the timeline. You can adjust the scrub rate from high-speed to fine scrubbing by sliding your finger down as you drag the playhead along the scrubber bar.

Keep your inbox clean.

In Mail, you can delete or move messages in batches. From your inbox, tap Edit, select the messages you want to organize, then tap Delete or Move.

Take a picture of your screen.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button, then press the Home button. Your screen flashes and the picture appears in your Camera Roll.

Create a playlist.

In the Music app, tap Playlists, then tap Add Playlist and give it a name. Now tap any song or video to add it to the playlist. You can add individual songs, entire albums, or all songs by an artist.

Tap to focus the camera.

While shooting video or photos, tap the screen where you want to focus. iPhone also adjusts the exposure and white balance automatically.

Display character count in text messages.

In Settings, tap Messages, then tap the Character Count switch. The count appears as you type when your message exceeds two lines. You may want to do this when carrier fees apply.

Print wirelessly from iPhone.

AirPrint makes it easy to print email and web pages from your iPhone to your AirPrint-enabled printer. To print an email, just tap the Reply icon and select Print. To print a web page, tap the Share button and select Print. You can also print photos, documents, and more.

Share from Notification Center.

Notification Center not only shows you what’s up with you, it can tell your social circle what’s up with you. Tweet or update your Facebook status right from Notification Center.

Get back to your draft.

In Mail, touch and hold the Compose button to switch to your list of saved message drafts.
